During the elementary years of Kindergarten through 5th grade, Messiah offers many fun and educational opportunities to grow in faith and make meaningful connections with other children and with nurturing adults. Some of these opportunities are:
Sunday School happens during the 9:00 a.m.worship service. Children start worship with parents, go up front for the children's message, then are guided to Sunday School.
Children in Kindergarten through 4th grade study a topic for five weeks in a row, rotating through age-appropriate lessons that engage the topic in different ways, using different learning styles. The rotations include Bible stories, games, cooking, music, and art. After the service, parents pick up their children from the appropriate classroom, which is listed in the worship bulletin.
In 5th grade, children take part in Holy Communion class, where they dive deeper into their faith and go through the process of preparing to take first communion, if they have not already. If they have started taking communion at a younger age, the class serves to deepen faith and understanding of communion. 5th graders paint their own clay chalices and take communion with family members at a special worship service in the Spring. First Communion will be Saturday, May 3rd at 5:00. While many children wait until 5th grade to take communion, younger children are welcome to take communion with parents' support.
Vacation Bible School happens during June each summer and is an amazing experience for everyone involved. The joy and excitement is almost more than this building can hold!
